Why did this challenge appeal to you,
and what gets in your way with visibility?
“I'd been telling myself since last year sometime that I had to do more of my own stuff…when your challenge came up, I was like, ‘Oh, perfect excuse to start doing that,’ and I've been doing it ever since. I've been posting, because I was like, ‘Well, how do I get restarted? Do I just pop up a poll?’ No. Then Christine comes along and goes, ‘Reintroduce yourself.’ Well, duh!”
Esther Ocampo
“This is an area that I have routinely neglected. I've been doing freelance copywriting now for probably a good three or four years and yet have done literally nothing to market myself or do anything kind of that nature, so I feel almost like I'm starting from scratch. I'd kind of isolated myself professionally, which is unsustainable. You think, well, that's no good, is it?”
Cathy Forward
“I help businesses stand out as leaders in their field but, because so much of my work comes through referrals and long-term relationships, I don't always give my own visibility the same attention I give to my clients. The challenge was a brilliant push to take time to look at how I'm showing up - and what I can do to improve. ”
Harriet Mathie
“I'm not a marketer; I'm a writer journalist by background. So going freelance meant that I had to up my marketing game, which I haven't really managed to achieve yet so far. So, yeah, I needed–I suppose I still need–a structure, some sort of pathway about how to do it and what would be most effective.”
Ralph Cunningham
What did you think of the format?
“Promoting ourselves always feels uncomfortable, no matter when you start or how much you understand about its importance. The reality, we all benefit from the proverbial 'Kick Up the Ass’ and timely reminders of its importance and why we mustn’t prevaricate, and instead to just get on with it with prompts. Christine’s sprint was a timely reminder of placing importance on being more visible and taking action.”
Lucy Guthrie
“I like that you offered basic and advanced tips. And I saw that, at least some of the things you said, I was already doing them, so I though, ‘I am on the right track.’ And on the other hand, I saw things that made me think, ‘OK, maybe I could try this.’”
Alicia Gonzalez Lopez
“If you think you only have the confidence or the skills to be a beginner, then you can do that. But there's another option if you feel more confident or happier to do more. So that was really helpful for me. There wasn't the expectation that you were a crack marketer, you know exactly what to do.”
Ralph Cunningham
Talking about what you do
“That's the basic, isn't it? To tell people what you do. First up, you can't expect them to go into your social media history and your posts and try and try to figure out for themselves what you do. So the introduction obviously is key to that, and it's something I need to do more often. To get that as the first step seemed the right way to start, for me anyway.”
Ralph Cunningham
“I sometimes do posts about what I do, but I'm not sure if I dive deep enough. So I saw that comment you put on the email saying to dive into specific elements of what you do. That's something I've started doing more.”
Alicia Gonzalez Lopez
“When I did the reintroducing myself, I got maybe 10 connection requests, and two direct messages asking for phone calls. I need to do it more periodically: “By the way, this is me.””
Esther Ocampo
Lasting Impact
“It's like a little snowball, isn't it? Three times a week I'm there saying, “I'm a copywriter from London specializing in education,” and you say over and over and then you kind of think, “Actually, I am,” and then you believe it. And then it gives you confidence, I think…I've just become utterly shameless now. I'm all over LinkedIn. I've been commenting on people's posts….And it's not that scary actually, you know, but I did need a push, and you're like, “Okay, they're doing it, everyone's doing it. Why would I not?””
Cathy Forward
“I think it's being consistent and knowing where to be and how to make the impact that you need, rather than just going at it scatter-gun or using messaging that's not really hitting the mark, really…It's always a good reminder; even if you know that you should be doing the things, I think you need the reminder, the accountability.
Victoria Bell
“I started to think differently of LinkedIn. I thought of LinkedIn as a sales tool…but now I'm thinking more of it as an opportunities tool. And the less you see LinkedIn as a sales tool, the more you will enjoy it…I started to worry less about, ‘Oh, I'm not getting DMs, I'm not getting requests,’ and I'm thinking more of, ‘Well, I'm getting more visibility. I'm getting to be seen more by the people that may actually later buy my services.’”
Alicia Gonzalez Lopez
“It was great because it gave me a structure. It gave me five steps to improving my visibility. And I think it did. It certainly gave me more confidence in following a structure, following a plan, to make sure that I'm not neglecting or ignoring my marketing.”
